Convention DVD Update: Renegade Teaser

Crizzly had a great concept for the video, so I put it
together :-)

I hope to make some excellent progress on the DVD this
weekend and keep on track with the May 7th shipping
deadline.

So, things are going well and I'll keep updating as
progress is made.

Convention DVD

Greetings!

I do believe there will be a highlights DVD.

I'm currently in the process (tapes are streaming even
as I type this) of moving the footage from the Camera
over to the laptop.

I have somewhere close to 9 hrs of footage to go
through . . . heh heh.

week even (if all goes well this weekend).

The Pacific Northwest Juggling Convention is a 3-day extravaganza for all ages. Open gym space, workshops, and a Vaudeville style public show will provide entertainment for spectators and participants. Beginners and seasoned performers will find challenges and enjoy the antics of others. Lessons on all levels of juggling, unicycling and other related topics will be provided.

The festival includes the 3rd Annual Sean McKinney Freestyle Competition.

The Pacific Northwest Juggling Convention is completely FREE to the public. There are no fees or charges for using the gym, taking workshops, or attending the shows. It's all FREE.

The Freeness of the convention has been made possible by generous donations from the hosting OSU Jugglers Club, our partners in the Corvallis Juggling & Unicycling Club, family, businesses, Corvallis Tourism, and the City of Corvallis. In addition, all of our professional performers have agreed to charge us for the cost of travel expenses only, so we owe them a huge thank you.

Unicyling at the PNWJC

There will be performances by unicyclers, also workshops for beginning and advanced unicycling. We are not planning on having trail rides for mountain unicyclers since the trails around Corvallis will be closed during our event. If things change in regards to the trail rides, we will post information here.

The latest information:

Rob Brown and Becky Banning, both accomplished unicyclists, will be attending the PNWJC. Rob Brown is listed as helping with the Beginner Unicycling Workshop, Advanced, Freestyle Workshops as well as performing in the Public Show. I'm guessing Becky Banning will be able to show you a few things as well during the workshops, but I'll let you take a look at her credentials yourself. :-)

What you are looking at is the sight of the Pacific Northwest Juggling Convention. This building is called McAlexander Fieldhouse (Map Location). It is located on the campus of Oregon State University. It is a very big building.

The near side is a very smooth cement floor space with two side-by-side basketball courts. The entire floor is painted which gives it that smooth feel and is great for doing 360s.

The far side is a soft, padded astro-turf soccer field that is equal in length and width as the two basketball courts.

There are two entrance/exits of which you can see some light coming through where the doors are in the photo. There are two bathroom/lockerooms, one for women and one for men. They are small but sufficient.

The ceilings are twice as high as the top of the basketball backboard, on the sides of the building. In the center it is much higher.

This is a photo of the stage in Milam Hall Auditorium (Map Location). This auditorium has 799 seats. There are 499 on the ground level and another 300 in a tiered balcony section.

Sean McKinney Freestyle Competition

The Pacific Northwest Juggling Convention is host to the 3rd Sean McKinney Freestyle Competition.

Here are the rules:

PRELIMINARIES

Preliminaries will be scheduled for the day before the competition. They will be held at the juggling convention on Friday, March 30, 2007. The finals will be held during the public show on Saturday, March 31, 2007. The preliminaries and the final competition will have different judging panels. If, in an extreme case, you are unable to attend the preliminaries, please contact Peggy to discuss alternatives. If you are planning to compete, you might like to view a PDF of the stage dimensions to help you plan your routine.

HOW MANY COMPETITORS

There will be a maximum of 5 final competitors.

TIME LIMIT

There will be an upper time limit of 8 minutes for each competitor. There will not be a deduction in the score if the routine is significantly less than 8 minutes. The competitor will also not be penalized for going slightly over the time limit. Time is not the important issue, we just want well put together, polished routines. The only reason for the upper limit is to keep the competition running tightly.

MUSIC/CHOREOGRAPHY

The routines should be set to music, as one of the aspects that the judges will be looking for is a 'connection to the music'. Sean was meticulous in his choreography, using the lyrics of the music to help express his juggling. Also in keeping with Sean's style/energy/spirit, the routine should not be improvised while on stage.

The judges will be looking for smooth transitions, use of full body and stage, connection to the music, and choreography that *looks* like it is almost improvised. The music should be appropriate for a general audience.

PROPS

The competitor may use whatever props they desire, in any amounts. Fire will have to be approved by the theater.

RULES

There really are no hard and fast rules, other than the guidelines that have been mentioned. We are not out to control peoples' juggling and how they express their creativity. In order for things to run smoothly, we need a few basic guidelines.

Competitors are not required to wear costumes, or have Prop stands, or acknowledge the judging panel with fake smiles, etc. Our rule of thumb for the competitors to follow is: this is a competition about YOU. Do what you feel passionate about, what makes you happy. We just want to help enable jugglers to accomplish this.

AWARD

The winner of the Sean McKinney Freestyle Competition will be awarded with the Sean McKinney Trophy and $100 dollars. The trophy will be engraved with the winners name and competition information.

PURPOSE

Our goal is not to have a Sean Mckinney impersonation contest. We are not encouraging competitors to copy Seans full routines, but, to see a few of Seans signature tricks incorporated into original routines would be fun and it would not affect the scoring.

What made sean and his juggling so amazing and so mesmerizing to watch? That is the kind of energy and spirit we are hoping to continue in future generations of jugglers. Sean didn't follow the crowd and do what was already out there. He was raw, edgy, and innovative. He had a deep passion for what he was creating. He took risks and his juggling had a purity to it that the audience could feel.

Watching Sean's juggling, one becomes lost in what was happening on stage. For those few minutes, the audience held its breath in anticipation of what would come next. With Sean's juggling there was no predictability. It was beautiful, inspired, athletic, mesmerizing, creative, innovative, and unique to Sean himself.

This is what we are trying to continue in the juggling community. We want to reward the risk-takers, the passionate artists/athletes. We feel that Sean's approach to juggling should be recognized. We want to encourage other performers to discover what makes them different and unique.

Not only are we honoring Sean with this competition, but we also want to honor other artists. Sean had a great respect for other artists, and through this competition, we are enabling him to still honor others' work.

Our goal is to create a competition that means something. A competition that will allow Sean's name, style, and energy to stay a part of the juggling community that he had such a huge part in forming and affecting, but also a competition that will be inspiring and FUN.

The Renegade Show typically has a smaller audience than the Public Show. It is a show where anyone brave enough, can volunteer to do a juggling/comedy/alternative act in front of an audience of jugglers/hecklers/alternative people.

The Renegade Show is intended for adult audiences only. Please bring your kids to the Public Show on Saturday night.
